Week 01

WEEKLY LECTURE | 04-06 JANUARY 2021

Today, after the lecture had introduced us to research and development and the assignment brief the lecture started the class by the topic "Planning Your Project" on how to setting it up. To get started we would need to think where we want to be and what don't we know of is the knowledge gap. There are many things that we did not know about society. The important part that we need to figure out is what problem we are trying to solve? and what isn't known about your topic. The lecture also thought us about how important is to justify the rationale. This gets me to think about the topic that I would want to do.

The topic also involves defining the differents between the target audience and user personas. A user persona is a semi-fictional character that bases on your product or projects consumer/customer. Personas are created by talking to the consumer and segmenting various demographic and psychographic data to improve product marketing. Target audience is a group of people that are identified as customers of the business. (Nielsen, 2019)

The example is shown by lecture on user profiles/personas:

The difference between quantitative and qualitative. Quantitative usually uses on the questionnaire or content analysis as the tool for gathering data for a larger sample so that it is generalisable positivist, but also can be used as part of research methods. Qualitative is richer data that can be used in a variety of methods through interviews, textual analysis and small sample interpretivism. (Hoffmeyer-Zlotnik and Warner, 2018)

Things to ask yourself:
1. What type of data do I need?
 - Text
 - Numerical
 - Both

2. Where can I obtain this data?
 - Source of information
 - Access

3. What are the obstacles to using this method?
 - Access
 - Cost
 - Time
 - Reliability of Data

From this, the most important question is who is this for? who will be using it?
and why will it work for them?  and we would also need to think about the goals of this project. I have learned that research is all about filling the knowledge gap on what we are trying to do.

Next, the research design is a framework of research methods. Example type of research experimental, survey, semi-experimental, review and also it's sub-type experimental design, research problem, descriptive case-study. From this, I have a clearer understanding of research finding and have a clear understanding of how should I start my research topics.

CLASS NOTE:

ACTIVITIES |

We were to separate into groups of two to complete our activities given by our lecture. It is to understand the research method on "qualitative - interview and quantitative - questionnaire". Zhi en and I were chosen in group 2. We are to do the topic quantitative - questionnaire.

In groups, spin the wheel to select the research method you must research.
Answer these questions:
- Bried description of the method
- Pros and cons of the method
- How is it done?

Topic
1. Qualitative - Interview
2. Quantitative - Questionnaire

Groups Answer:
Quantitative - Questionnaire

Brief description of the method
- A questionnaire is a research instrument that consists of a series of questions for the purpose of gathering information from respondents.
- Questionnaire can be thought of as a kind of written interview. it is often used as a data collector.

Pros and Cons Pros
1. practical way to gather data, can via online
2. easy to collect results, faster
3. can gather information from a large audience and it is easier to compare
4. easy analysis of results have a conclusion

Cons
1. some questions will be ignored or left unanswered
2. different interpretations of your questions(will have a different understanding of the question)
3. dishonest answer

How is it done
1. if the company we can send by email
2. spread from one to another
3. add on a social media platform like a website

Example of questions
1.basic information, like gender or age
2. multiple choice question, or rating question

 PROJECT PROGRESS |

On the first day of class, we were introduced to research and development. We are asked to consider what we would want to do on our final project and what topic we are interested in. The media will be related to AR, VR, UX UI, and Arduino as the execution.

To get started, I did some brainstorming on finding out what I would want to create and what I am interested in learning more about in the process of creating the final project.

Strength "what am I good at?
 - First of all, my strengths would be interpersonal skills and software skills and I have no problem with communication with working in a team. I am also a friendly person in which I can easily communicate with others. My weakness would be problem-solving skills, although I am weak at it I would still learn on how to solve the problem by doing my own research. I rely a lot on communication skills as it allows me to get adapt to another working environment. My curiosity about solving a problem gets me motivated to get the project done. I am not afraid of making mistakes as they say "mistakes help a person grows," said (Goodreads.com, 2020).

Interests "what do I like to do?
 - There is an unlimited field out there that I would like to explore. Which makes me consider not stopping in one field. Areas that I would like to explore in, a website designer, computer-game graphic, and effect designer for movies. Since I had graduated in graphic design in diploma and now I had taken digital media in degree, it is quite interesting to learn new knowledge and skills. I found it quite challenging and fun at the same time. I would still need time to complete a project as there are some technical difficulties that I do not understand. In the end, I enjoy the progress.

Future development
 - What would I like to learn?
I would like to learn about AR, VR and Arduino. I realise that it is quite useful in the future where I can adapt to the working field. In the future, I would like to work as a Digital Designer and a Graphic Designer. The benefit of being able to do both digital and graphic work. It allows me to explore more knowledge. There is an endless skill for me to discover.

Idea 1
Topic "Society of today"

What is it about?
This project is about the social problem that causes by the pandemic. The selected issues that people face during this pandemic is communication, behaviour and conflicts. This project is to help people to understand how to communicate with each other with the right behaviour.

The goal of this project
The proposed of the project is to create a game. Each level would be having a mission for the audience to complete so that they can move to the next level. Each mission would involve a topic that is communication, behaviour and patience. The media that would be involved would be creating game apps? or AR/VR

Idea 2

Topic “Decoloring”

What is it about?

This project is to help Monochromatism colour blindness people to understand colour. Monochromatism is known as complete colour blindness, they can only utilise shades of grey, black, and white.

Why is it important to understand colour?

Colour plays a vitally important role in the world which we live. Colour is important; it can sway thinking, change actions, and even cause reactions. It can irritate or soothe your eyes, raise your blood pressure or suppress your appetite. When used in the right ways, colour can even save on energy consumption.

Colour is a powerful communication tool that can be used to signal action, influence physiological reactions, and even influence our mood. Certain colours have been associated with increases in metabolism, blood pressure, and eyestrain. (Color blindness – Symptoms and Treatments for Color Blindness : Bausch + Lomb, 2021)

The goal of this project
To create a VR monotone world and plus some interesting interaction inside to let the audience explore the virtual world. By creating simple tasks in the virtual world to help the colour blindness people, so that in reality they would understand and know what to do.”
  • Create an understanding of colour blindness people.

  • Don’t take advantage of colour.
